Il est loin désormais le temps où les Made In Japan, On Stage, Live Killers ou Live After Death, pour n’en citer que quelques uns, enflammaient les platines. Ca fait une paye maintenant qu’il nous a pas été donné d’écouter un live mythique et, nonobstant les qualités incontestables d’Amorphis, ce n’est pas ce Forging the Land of Thousand Lakes qui devrait venir combler ce vide.
Pas suffisamment de folie, de démesure. De magie également. Ce manque ne fait de ce premier témoignage en public des Finlandais un mauvais disque, seulement un live de plus quand on attendais - espérait - un enregistrement promis à devenir un mètre-étalon du genre. Ce n’est donc pas le cas.
Il n’en demeure pas moins que cette double ration, qui se décline sous plusieurs formats, auditif et visuel, mérite le détour, davantage un habile panachage d’une carrière exemplaire qu’un instantané. Pourtant, étonnamment (ou non), Amorphis ne privilégie nullement l’ère Tomi Joutsen, quand bien même le petit dernier, le merveilleux Skyforger, a droit à plusieurs emprunts (dont les superbes « Silver Bride », « Sampo » ou « Sky Is Mine ») pour galoper parfois sur des terres plus abruptes, celles des débuts et des légendaires Tales from the Thousand Lakes (« Black Winter Day »…) et Elegy (« My Kantele »), tandis que la période la plus progressive n’est pas oublié (c’eut été regrettable). Les Finlandais jouent même les archéologues en exhumant l’antédiluvien « Sign From the Northside », tiré du premier opus The Karelian Isthmes !
Sinon, il va sans dire que le groupe est au taquet livrant une performance qui ne saurait susciter la moindre réserve. C’est très bien fait donc, les fans seront certainement comblés cependant que les néophytes y trouveront une idéale porte d’entrée menant à la découverte de cette entité majeure du metal des années 90/2000. Toutefois l’impression de départ demeure. Forging the Land of the Thousand Lakes se révèle être un bon live car les tous ses titres sont de petits bijoux d’écriture et d’interprétation, mais un live dont on imagine mal qu’il marquera son temps et donc encore moins l’histoire. Ne boudons toutefois pas notre plaisir… 7/10
