KröniK | Affliction Gate - Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions (2012)

Petite galette de quatorze minutes à peine, Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions vaut pourtant son pesant de viscères et ce, pour plusieurs raisons. Parce que, d'une part, ce EP marque, trois ans après Aeon Of Nox (From Darkness Comes Liberation), le retour d'Affliction Gate, sans doute notre meilleur héraut d'un Death Metal ultra Heavy aux entournures, coincé entre les pères fondateurs Bolt Thrower (un peu) et Asphyx (surtout) et leurs cousins suédois, celle de l'école Rogga Johansson notamment. D'autre part et puisqu'on parle de lui, car le stakhanoviste à la discographie aussi longue que le manche de John Holmes a justement régurgité un des quatre titres de cette rapide coulée de pue : "Aftermath : Curse", saillie saignante au rythme implacable.

Rogga n'est du reste pas le seul "nom" au générique de Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions, Eric Daniels, l'ancien guitariste d'Asphyx et tête pensante du nouveau venu Grand Supreme Blood Court, ayant composé et enregsitré la ligne de guitare ouvrant "Memories Of Battlefield (Life)". On reste en famille donc, une famille de coeur attachée à une certaine vision orthodoxe du Death Metal, Old school et rampant, lourd et morbide. Une dernière raison, mais pas des moindres, est à noter : la qualité de cette maigre ration à laquelle il suffit de ses trois morceaux, plus un instrumental terminal lugubre ("Omega"), pour confirmer la haute valeur ajoutée d'Affliction Gate dont on aimerait tellement qu'il soit aussi productif qu'il est inspiré ! De fait, malgré le goût de trop peu qu'il laisse dans la bouche, Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions se révèle indispensable pour tous ceux qui estiment - à raison ? - que le vrai Death Metal ne doit pas être autre chose, ne doit pas sonner différement ! A small cake of just fourteen minutes long, Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions is worth its weight in viscera for several reasons. Because, on the one hand, this EP marks, three years after Aeon Of Nox (From Darkness Comes Liberation), the return of Affliction Gate, undoubtedly our best herald of an ultra Heavy Death Metal, stuck between the founding fathers Bolt Thrower (a little) and Asphyx (especially) and their Swedish cousins, notably that of the Rogga Johansson school. On the other hand, and since we are talking to him because the stakhanovist with a discography as long as John Holmes' neck has regurgitated one of the four tracks of this quick stink flow: "Aftermath: Curse", a bleeding projection with an implausible rhythm. Rogga is not the only "name" in the credits of Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions, Eric Daniels, the former Asphyx guitarist and head of the newcomer Grand Supreme Blood Court, who composed and recorded the opening guitar line "Memories Of Battlefield (Life)". We remain as a family, a family of hearts attached to a certain orthodox vision of Death Metal, Old school and crawling, heavy and morbid. A last but not least reason is to be noted: the quality of this meagre ration, to which only three pieces, plus a dismal terminal instrumental ("Omega"), are required to confirm the high added value of Affliction Gate, which we would so much like to see as productive as it is inspired! In fact, despite the taste of too little it leaves in the mouth, Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions is essential for all those who believe - rightly - that it is essential. - that the real Death Metal shouldn't be anything else, shouldn't sound different!
