KröniK | Crystal Viper - At The Edge Of Time (2018)

Une mise en garde pour commencer : "At The Edge Of Time" n’est ni le nouvel album de Crystal Viper ni même un véritable EP comme AFM se plait à le vendre. Certes, fort de ses cinq pistes s’étalant sur une vingtaine de minutes, l’objet en a le format. Mais, n’offrant en réalité que deux titres vraiment inédits, la rondelle s’apparente davantage à un single gonflé aux hormones. Du coup, malgré toute la sympathie que l’on peut avoir pour les Polonais et notamment pour sa chanteuse, la redoutable Marta Gabriel, il est permis de trouver douteux ce qui n’est au final d’un produit mercantile, lequel donne qui plus est l’impression d’avoir été fabriqué à la va-vite afin de capitaliser sur le succès de "Queen Of The Witches", dernier opus du groupe dont ce 10 pouces semble vouloir être le complément, comme le suggère la relecture de ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ dont la belle tenue ne la rend pas moins inutile.

Le fait de proposer deux fois le morceau éponyme, en Anglais tout d’abord, puis dans la langue maternelle de ses géniteurs, n’incite pas à la bienveillance. Ajoutons à cela une prise de son qui paraîtra au mieux old school, au pire datée et un artwork au rabais, indigne d’Andreas Marshall (que la beauté de son travail pour Blind Guardian semble loin !) et vous aurez définitivement compris que "At The Edge Of Time" se révèle être une sortie franchement anecdotique. Heureusement, le morceau-titre et ‘When Are You’ sont de qualité, le premier dans la veine heavy qui a fait le succès des Polonais, le second sur un mode ballade qui permet à Marta de piocher dans un registre émotionnel qui lui sied tout autant. Enfin, la reprise de Quartz, ‘Tell Me Why’ n’est pas sans charme même si le groupe ne donne pas l’impression d’avoir forcé son talent. Cet EP est donc à prendre pour ce qu’il est, offrande aussi sympathique que dispensable à réserver aux fans désireux de tout posséder, jusqu'à la moindre miette. (22.07.2018) ⍖⍖

A word of caution to start with: "At The Edge Of Time" is neither Crystal Viper's new album nor even a real EP as AFM likes to sell it. Certainly, with its five tracks spread over about twenty minutes, the object has the format. But, actually offering only two really new titles, the puck is more like a single inflated with hormones. So, despite all the sympathy we can have for the Poles and especially for its singer, the formidable Marta Gabriel, it is permissible to find doubtful what is not at the end of a commercial product, which gives the impression that it was made in haste in order to capitalize on the success of "Queen Of The Witches", the band's latest album, of which this 10 inch seems to be the complement, as suggested by the review of "When The Sun Goes Down" whose beautiful outfit does not make it any less useful. The fact that the eponymous song is offered twice, first in English and then in the mother tongue of its progenitors, does not encourage benevolence. Add to that a sound recording that will seem at best old school, at worst dated and a cheap artwork, unworthy of Andreas Marshall (that the beauty of his work for Blind Guardian seems far away!) and you will definitely have understood that "At The Edge Of Time" turns out to be a really anecdotal release. Fortunately, the title track and'When Are You' are of high quality, the first in the heavy vein that made the success of the Poles, the second in a ballad mode that allows Marta to pick in an emotional register that suits her just as much. Finally, the cover of Quartz,'Tell Me Why' is not without charm even if the band does not give the impression of having forced its talent. This EP is therefore to be taken for what it is, an offering as sympathetic as it is dispensable to reserve for fans who want to own everything, down to the last crumb. (22.07.2018)
